Is My Property in The Floodplain?

Step 1.  Floodplain Status & Lookup Resources (Web Mapping Tools)

Floodplains are defined as areas of land that are subject to being periodically inundated by waters from any source.  Floodplains are generally defined by the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) shown on Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) which are produced by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), by the 100-year floodplain limits shown on Flood Hazard Area Delineation (FHAD) studies, and by unmapped or unstudied drainageways which receive stormwater runoff from a tributary area of 130 acres or more.

Below are some sources to determine whether or not a property or structure are located in a floodplain.  Be aware that SEMSWA regulates to the Best Available Data

Google Earth (Requires Google Earth software & FEMA 100 Year Floodplain (.kmz) file download) - This allows the user to utilize Google Earth and view FEMA's floodplain layer on top of the aerial mapping.

Arapahoe County GIS (ArapaMap)  - This website allows the user to type in a property address or parcel information in the Arapahoe County area and provides a FEMA delineated floodplain map that includes aerial photography and parcel lines.

Urban Drainage EDM - This website allows the user to type in a property address and find studies such as Flood Hazard Area Delineations in the area.

FEMA Mapping Information Platform - This website allows the user to type in a property address and find the flood hazard information from FEMA's  National Flood Hazard Layer.  These maps are comprised of Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) databases and Letters of Map Revision (LOMRs).

FEMA Map Service Center - This website allows the user to type in a property address and find the official FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs).  These are the maps that are used for official flood insurance determinations.

Additionally, you may contact SEMSWA's Floodplain Program at 303-858-8844 or use the Contact Us form for lookup services.

Step 2:  If your property is in or near the floodplain, and you plan on doing work in the area, here are some resources:

  • Review SEMSWA's Floodplain Brochure
  • Planning and Constructing Home Improvements in the Floodplain
  • Construction Requirements for Work in Floodplains
  • Review SEMSWA's Stormwater Management Manuals

Step 3:  If your property is not in or near the floodplain, you may still want to educate yourself further about stormwater and flooding issues:

  • Community Outreach
  • Flood Safety and Preparation Resources
